Biographical/Historical Information

Gustav Hess was born December 4, 1862 in Bernburg, Duchy of Anhalt-Bernburg. As a young man, Hess served in the Imperial German Army.

Hess was a chemist and, in 1895, he founded the paint factory Chemische Fabrik Gustav Hess in Pirna, a town along the Elbe River in Saxony. Gustav Hess was the father of Albert G. Hess (1909-1993), Ilse Roston (Rosenstern) (1897-1985), and Manfred Hess (1898-1980). He died March 11, 1923 in Pirna. This portrait was owned by his son, Albert G. Hess, and it was likely painted in Dresden.

August Wilckens (1870-1939) was a German painter. He studied and worked in Germany and in Denmark. Wilckens was especially known for painting genre and landscape scenes from the Danish area of Fanø.
