Biographical/Historical Information

Berthold M. (Martin) Herko was born as Herbert Cohn in 1896 in Chemnitz, Germany. He went to school in Berlin before escaping the Nazis to live in Caracas, Venezuela and then in New York. Herko studied etching with Kathe Kollwitz and painting with Walter Kurau and Georg Tappert, working as a commercial illustrator and as a cartoonist for magazines and newspapers. He was primarily a European Expressionist and portraitist, painting Max Reinhardt, Richard Strauss, Jackie Coogan, Andreas Weisberger and personalities in the arts, politics and industry. Herko was seen in one-man-shows and group shows in New York, Berlin, Zürich, Chicago, Buenos Aires, Paris and, London. He died in 1988 in Yorktown, NY. https://www.bmherko.com/
