Biographical/Historical Information

Due to news of a secret German rearmament, Western powers revoked the military equality granted to the German Reich in December 1932. As a result, Germany withdrew from the Conference on Disarmament and from the League of Nations on October 14, 1933. Meanwhile, unemployment declined not only in Germany but also in the other industrialized countries. In Germany, however, the unemployment rate was lowered by planned economic measures: In January 1934, there were still 3.75 million unemployed; in December 1935, 2.5 million; in September 1936, 1 million. Jobs were created, among other things, through the construction of the Reichsautobahn, through the Arbeitsdienst (Reich Labour Service), and through compulsory military service. All these factors led to the view that Hitler was building "An empire of order and cleanliness" (as described in the poster).
