Biographical/Historical Information
The first Bundestag of the Federal Republic of Germany was elected on August 14, 1949. With 202 out of 402 votes, Dr. Konrad Adenauer (born 1876) became the first Federal Chancellor on September 15, 1949. He became the decisive political figure in German post-war history. He led the Christian Union parties through several election campaigns to become the dominant political power with an increasingly conservative character.
