Biographical/Historical Information

The paramilitary Sturmabteilung (SA, or Brown Shirts) played a key role in Hitler's rise to power. However, Ernst Röhm (leader of the SA) had demanded the "completion of the revolution", and Röhm sought for the SA to receive more political power, which Hitler did not like. In the so-called "Night of the Long Knives" (Röhm-Putsch) on June 30, 1934, Hitler had 200 SA leaders (including Ernst Röhm) and other disfavored persons murdered, thus stifling all such efforts. After that, the SA only appeared as a backdrop at party events. The ideal of the old "Sturmabteilung" - a military way of life with fighting games, boots, uniforms, contempt for the bourgeoisie - was evoked in this poster.
