Biographical/Historical Information
In April 1932, Reich Chancellor Heinrich Brüning bans the NSDAP paramilitary groups Sturmabteilung (SA) and Schutzstaffel (SS), after having also banned the Rotfrontkämpferbund (a Communist paramilitary group) in 1929. In May, President von Hindenburg surprisingly dismissed Brüning, who was too reform-minded. Franz von Papen becomes the new Reich Chancellor; in June he lifts the ban on the SA and SS - a concession to the NSDAP for tolerating his cabinet. As a result, the campaign for the Reichstag elections (July 1932) is conducted with unheard-of crudeness.
