Summary
Poster is all black text on a bright purple background.
The Weimar Constitution provides for the possibility of plebiscite. The "popular petition" is the demand of ten percent of those eligible to vote (by registering on a list) that a "referendum" be called on a particular matter. If more than 50 % of those eligible to vote then vote in favor of the motion, it becomes law. The assets of the German princely houses were confiscated in the Revolution, but not expropriated. Against a bill providing for restitution or compensation, the left-wing parties (with 12 million signatures) sought a referendum. On June 20, 1926, 15.5 million voters then voted in favor of the complete expropriation of the princes' assets, though 20 million votes had been necessary. The result is generally seen as a defeat for the revolution.
