Biographical/Historical Information
In March 1930, the "grand coalition" of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Catholic Center Party (Zentrum), German Democratic Party (DDP), and German People's Party (DVP) breaks up over differences on financial issues. The new Reich Chancellor, Heinrich Brüning (from the Zentrum), governs without a majority in Parliament by means of "emergency decrees" under Article 48 of the constitution. The R eichstag, refusing to approve the emergency decrees, is dissolved by PresidentHindenburg. The new elections in September bring spectacular successes for the extreme right-wingparties: out of 577 seats, the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiter-Parte (NSDAP) wins 107 (previously 12 out of 491), the KPD 77 (previously 54). These results reflect the onset of a world economic crisis. The poster, from the NSDAP, unmistakably announces the intention to give the endangered democracy the rest.
