Biographical/Historical Information

Rabbi Henry Joseph Messing was born in 1848, the third son of Rabbi Joseph Messing (1812-1880), originally from Argenau, Prussia (today Gniewkowo, Poland). Henry and his two brothers, Rabbi Aaron Messing (1843-1916) and Rabbi Meyer Messing came to the US in 1867, and all become congregational rabbis. After a few positions of short duration in the Midwest and in Pennsylvania, Henry Messing became Senior Rabbi of United Hebrew Congregation in St. Louis in 1878, where he remained for the rest of his life; he died in 1913.
