Biographical/Historical Information
The Talmudic author and philosopher Rabbi Hirsch Kalischer was born in Lissa, Posen in 1795. He was a student of Akiba Eger. Kalischer was a protagonist of the Jewish colonization of Palestine, as written down in his book “Drischath Zion” (“Making of Zion”); he became known as the “First Zionist”. Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer died in Thorn (Toruń, Poland) in 1874.
