Biographical/Historical Information

Mary Wigman, a famous exponent of modern dance, was born in Hanover as Karoline Sophie Marie Wiegmann). She studied with Jaques Dalcroze and founded the Wigmann School in Dresden, Germany. Mary Wigman died in West-Berlin in 1973.

The photographer Charlotte Rudolph was born in Dresden, where she opened a photo studio in 1924, specializing in portrait- and dance photography. Her “expressive dance” photographs are important documents of Germany’s avant-garde in the 1920s. Charlotte Rudolph died in Hamburg in 1983.
