Biographical/Historical Information
Jozsef Janosi-Engel (J. Engel, 1851-1939) was a Hungarian author and musicologist, the son of a Jewish industrialist. He is best known for his literary debate with the composer Richard Wagner regarding his antisemitic stance.
Leonid Osipovich Pasternak (1862-1945) was the son of a Jewish Orthodox family in the Ukraine. After academic studies in Moscow, he graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and became widely known as a successful impressionist painter.
