Biographical/Historical Information
Richard Nathan (1873-1958) was born in Gau-Algesheim, Germany, in 1873, one of six children of Hermann Nathan (1837-1903) and Henriette Nathan née Guthmann (1842-1880). Richard received his primary education at the Philanthropin school in Frankfurt am Main. In 1894, he served in the Prussian Army. In the early 1900s, Richard and his brother Wilhelm (later to be joined by Alfred) founded a shoe manufacturing company, “R. & W. Nathan”, which grew into a larger enterprise known as the “Ada-Ada” factory. In 1907, Richard married Anna David. Richard and Anna Nathan had three sons. The Ada-Ada factory had to be sold in 1937, and by April 1938, they had relocated to the United States, where they settled in Chicago. In the fall of 1938, Richard and his brother William Nathan opened a new factory, the Sun Shoe Manufacturing Company. Anna and Richard Nathan died 1958 in Chicago.
