Biographical/Historical Information

The graphic artist Joseph Budko was born in Plonsk, Poland, in 1880. He settled in Berlin in 1910, moving to Palestine in 1933, where he was appointed Director of the Bezalel School of Art and Crafts. Like his teacher, Hermann Struck, Budko developed a style that combined personal attitude with Jewish mentality, a synthesis of Jewish tradition and modern artistic approach. He also revived the spirit of Jewish book illustration, elevating it to modern design. Joseph Budko died in Jerusalem in 1940.
