    Three drawings that outline the production of the tragedy "Lulu" by Frank Wedekind, directed by Kurt Hirschfeld at the Zurich Theater in 1962: Scene 1 is a sparsely decorated living room with a ladder, an easel, and some furniture, as well as artifacts and boxes in the background; Scene 2 plays in an opulently decorated living and dining room area with grouped chairs around a table, a chaise lounge, and an armchair; and Scene 3 is a sumptuous set with fine furniture, artwork, a clothing rack, and decorative doorways.

    Also included are three preliminary drawings that sketch the final stage design.

Biographical/Historical Information

"Lulu" is a tragedy written by Frank Wedekind, though originally it was presented as two separate plays: "Earth Spirit" and "Pandora's Box." These stage designs were for the 1962 production of "Lulu" directed by Kurt Hirschfeld at the Zurich Theater.

Teo Otto was a renowned stage designer. Born in Remscheid, Otto studied at the Kassel Art Academy for painting and stage design under Ewald Dülberg from 1923 to 1926, after which he served as Dülberg's assistant. In 1930, he was appointed as head of design at the Prussian State Theater. He was eventually let go due to his opposing political views with the Nazis. This led him to emigrate to Switzerland in 1933, where he worked as a stage designer at the Zurich Theater until his death in 1968. Otto also designed for a number of international theaters and productions.
