    Pocket watch with a separate chain. The maker's name J.M. French Royal Exchange London is on the face. The numbers on the face of the watch are in Roman numerals and there is a separate timer for the seconds. The watch has a hinged back, featuring a decorative botanical motif. The chain has loops on both ends and came in a box for the Sherwoods Watchmakers & Jewellers of Wellington, N.Z.

Biographical/Historical Information

The Marcus family came from Berlin and Vienna.

The following note came with the items: "This watch chain is supposed to have been worn by my great-great-grandfather Hirsch Marcus (1748-1828). Since his death it has always belonged to his oldest male descendant: First to Hirsch' son Joachim who lived from 1784 to 1831 passing away only three years after his father. Then to Moritz Marcus, my grandfather (1819-1879), and after that it belonged to my uncle Hugo Marcus (1855-1937) who left the chain in the will to my cousin Moritz Marcus (1890-1955) who in turn directed in his testament that the chain be turned over to me in safekeeping for one of my sons. H.E.M. (1907-1966)".
