Biographical/Historical Information
Vera Gutmann née Friedmann was born in 1910 in Breslau, Germany to Adolf and Lotte Friedmann. At age 19 she married Kurt Rosenthal, who died in Berlin during Nazi imposed slave labor. Vera survived the Holocaust in hiding in Berlin, together with her mother. They immigrated to the US in 1946, joining Vera’s brother Hans Freeman in Chicago. She married John Gutmann, and they moved to Carmel, CA, where she opened a glove business, 'Vera Vogue'. Vera would make custom gloves matched to womens' shoes, hats, or coats, and she often embellish the gloves with fur, jewels, or other trimmings. She died in 1986.
