Biographical/Historical Information
The philosopher Ernst Cassirer was born in Breslau, Silesia. After studying literature and philosophy at the University of Marbug (specifically with his mentor, Hermann Cohen), he taught in Berlin until 1919, when he moved to the newly founded University of Hamburg. In March of 1933, Cassirer emigrated to England, then Sweden, and eventually to the United States, teaching at Oxford and at Gothenburg, and then at Yale and at Columbia. Ernst Cassirer died in New York in 1945.
The philosopher Karl Joël was born March 27, 1864, in Hirschberg, Silesia, the son of a rabbi. After studies in Leipzig and in Berlin, he was appointed to the University of Basel in 1897. Karl Joël stayed in Switzerland until his death in 1934.
The philosopher Arthur Liebert (1878-1946) was born and educated in Berlin, where he lived until he was forced to leave at the age of 65 in 1933. He taught at the University of Belgrade until 1939, before emigrating to Birmingham, England, and returning to Berlin in 1946.
The sculptor Alexander Oppler (1869-1937) was born in Hannover, the son of architect Edwin Oppler and brother of painter Ernst Oppler. Alexander studied in Munich, Brussels, and Paris, and joined the Secessions in Munich as well as in Berlin. Alexander Oppler died in Berlin in 1937.
