Biographical/Historical Information

Rabbi Albert H. Friedlander was born in Berlin in 1927. After Kristallnacht, the family escaped to Cuba; Albert, his twin brother and their sister were sent to separate foster homes in Mississippi, and the parents followed later. Albert graduated from college at age 18 and went on to Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. He also was a highly regarded long-distance runner. Friedlander studied at Columbia University in New York City and gained his Ph.D. in theology with a thesis about the work of Rabbi Leo Baeck. From 1966 on, Rabbi Friedlander served in congregations in England, culminating at the Westminster Synagogue in Knightsbridge, London, where he stayed until his retirement. Rabbi Dr. Albert Friedlander served as president of the World Union for Progressive Judaism in London and sat on the board of the Leo Baeck Institute. Rabbi Albert Friedlander died in London in 2004.
