    The image is a photograph of Richard Lippold creating his artwork 'The Sun' or 'Variation within a sphere #10: The Sun' (1956). The piece was commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1953. The work measures sixteen feet across and eleven feet high, weaving nine intersecting disks and 14,000 welded joints of fine gold-plated wire. The verso of the photograph has the John Schiff stamp and "Richard Lippold" written twice in pencil.

Biographical/Historical Information

American sculptor Richard Lippold was known for his geometric constructions using wire as a medium. Lippold taught at several universities, including Hunter College at the City University of New York, from 1952 to 1967.
