Biographical/Historical Information
Louisa Matthíasdóttir was a painter, originally from Reykjavík. She studied the arts in Denmark and in Paris. Her paintings established her as a leading figure in the Icelandic avant-garde community. In these paintings she utilized a broad brush to emphasize the geometric form. In 1942 she moved to New York City and in 1944 she married painter Leland Bell.
