Biographical/Historical Information

Lottie Abt was born on November 30, 1921, to Franziska née Heine and Hermann Seligmann in Bielefeld, Germany, and lived there until immigrating to the United States in 1934. Her birth father, Hermann Seligmann, died in 1928, and her mother married Ernest Weinman in 1930; Lottie and her younger brother Herbert took their stepfather’s surname immediately after their mother remarried. Anticipating the danger that Nazis posed for Jews, Ernest brought Lottie to Chicago in 1934 to look for opportunities there. He left his stepdaughter with relatives, returned to Germany to close the family business, and brought Lottie's mother and younger brother to Chicago one year later. Lottie learned bookkeeping and was working in Chicago when she met Arthur Abt in early 1946, marrying him that same year in October. Lottie returned to bookkeeping after her children reached adulthood and worked for the Jewish Vocational Service. Lottie Abt died on April 23, 2019, at age 97.
