Biographical/Historical Information
Heinrich Heine was born in Düsseldorf in 1797 to a Jewish family. He was a German romantic poet, journalist, essayist and critic known for his lyric poetry and his radical political views which forced him into exile in Paris, where he died in 1856.
Karl Konrad Friedrich Bauer (1868–1942) was a German artist, printmaker and poet. He was born in Stuttgart and studied art there and in Munich. Bauer travelled frequently to Italy and France while still a student. In Venice in 1891, he met and befriended the poet Stefan George. Bauer's portrait of Stefan George is the most famous representation of the poet. Bauer's traditional skills in draftsmanship made him a popular illustrator and portrait artist. In his later life, he made a number of portraits of Nazi leaders.
