Biographical/Historical Information

Max Oppenheimer (also known as MOPP) was born in Vienna on July 1, 1885. He studied at the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Vienna from 1900 to 1903, and then in Prague under Franz Thiele until 1906. He shared a studio with Egon Schiele in 1910, and like Schiele he developed a very personal, expressionist style. Oppenheimer contributed drawings to the left-wing periodical ‘Die Aktion’. He moved to Berlin in 1912 and took up etching, and then he worked in Switzerland in the 1910s and early 1920s, before returning to Berlin in 1926. Max Oppenheimer emigrated to New York in 1938, where he died in 1954.
