Biographical/Historical Information
Friedrich Pollak (1831-1914) was born in Wölking, in what was then southern Moravia. He was the second son and one of five children of Leopold Pollak (ca. 1796-1875) and Fanni Pollak (née Peschka) (ca. 1803-1863). Friedrich married Franziska (née Fischel) (1840-1907) in 1861, and they moved to Vienna. Working in textile manufacturing, Friedrich became successful enough to establish his own firm in 1875. He and Franziska had five children, two of whom took over his textile firm. His father Leopold moved into their house in Vienna until his own death in 1875. Coming from a family of observant Jews, Friedrich helped to finance and build a synagogue near their house in Vienna, the Schmalzhoftempel. He died at age 82 in 1914.
