Biographical/Historical Information

Otto Anninger (1874-1954) was the son of Wilhelm Abeles (later Anniger) (1848-1918), who worked in cotton-brokering at Wm. Abeles & Co., and Charlotte (née Schlesinger) (1854-1875). Wilhelm had changed the family name from Abeles to the less Jewish-sounding name Anninger in 1888. Otto later took over the family's textile business as a senior partner.

Otto Anninger married Clara (née Wolf) (1886-1938) in 1904. They had three children together: Lotte (born in 1905), Robert (born in 1919), and Victor (born in 1911). The family lived in a large house in Vienna called the Lannerstrasse. Control of the family cotton and textile business passed onto his son Victor in the 1930s. The family fled Austria in March 1938 for various locations in Europe (including Zuerich and Paris) in order to secure their safety; Clara committed suicide in Paris in September 1938. Otto managed to secure passage to New York in 1939, where some of his children had already settled.
