2022.16 Jakob Wassermann portrait
Portrait of Jakob Wassermann, noted German Jewish author. His most important works are considered to be the novel ‘Der Fall Maurizius’ (1928) and his autobiography, ‘Mein Weg als Deutscher und Jude’ (My Life as a German and a Jew; 1921). The portrait was painted in the early 20th century by Agnes Ulmann. LBI Art & Objects Collection, 2022.16.

2021.14 Self Portrait Samson Schames
Self Portrait I by Samson Schames, India Ink and gouche on paper, done in May 1963. According to a note on the back of this piece, Schames made this self-portrait after an unpleasant dental visit where he had ten teeth pulled. Samson Schames was an artist and designer from one of the oldest Jewish families in Frankfurt. In 1939 Schames emigrated to Great Britain, though he was later interned as an enemy alien near Liverpool. After his release, he volunteered for the Civil Defense during the time of the London Blitz. Schames created art during and about these experiences of wartime. He and his wife emigrated to New York in 1948, where he then continued to have a successful career as an artist. 2022.34 Benno Elkan medal
Meine Liebe Frau bronze medal, done by Benno Elkan in 1924. Round medal shows a profile of a woman with the following text incised around: Meine Liebe Frau - Lo Dolce Ber Che Mai Non M'Auria Sazio. Benno Elkan was a self taught sculptor and artist who lived and worked all throughout Europe. LBI Art & Objects Collection, 2022.34.
2022.45 Gingerbread mold
Wooden gingerbread mold from the 17th or 18th century, the design of which shows a man dressed in Georgian period dress, on horseback. The gingerbread mold was owned by the poet, novelist, and playwright, Richard Beer-Hofmann (1866-1945), who was known for collecting antiques. Beer-Hofmann passed the mold on to a relative, and the piece had a few different homes before ending up in the collection of the Leo Baeck Institute. LBI Art & Objects Collection, 2022.45.
2022.25c Gerda cup
Small silver cup for Gerda Preuss, probably from when she was a child in the 1920s. The Preuss family were middle-class German Jews from Dusseldorf originally. LBI has the archival collection of the Preuss Family (AR 25974). LBI Art & Objects Collection, 2022.25c.
