Search the LBI Catalog
The LBI Catalog contains the complete archival, library, and art collections of the Leo Baeck Institute. More than 12,000 archival collections, 5,000 memoirs and manuscripts, 25,000 photographs, 800 interviews, 80,000 books, 1,600 periodicals, and 8,000 artworks and objects constitute the most significant repository of primary source material and scholarship related to the history and culture of German-speaking Jews over the past five centuries. Most of our collections can be easily accessed online. Non-digitized material can be requested for the CJH Reading Room by booking an appointment via your Library Service Account and placing a hold request (= follow "request item" link in the middle of a catalog record while logged in). Here are some other ways you can access and engage with LBI's collections. Please note that everything found in the portals listed in this section can also be found in the LBI Catalog above.
Larger archival collections are described in Finding Aids (=guides to the collection) explaining the collections’ range and historical/biographical background. “ArchivesSpace” locates documents, such as vital records, certificates, photographs, correspondence and more. Many collections are already digitized and can be accessed online.
The Edythe Griffinger Portal represents a curated selection of paintings, posters, and photographs from LBI’s art, archives, library, and photograph collections. Also included are ceremonial and personal objects of Jewish emigrants from German lands.
The CJH Catalog shows all resources in the library-, archival-, and other holdings of the Center’s five partners: the American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Yeshiva University Museum, YIVO Institute for Jewish Resource, and the Leo Baeck Institute.
Academics and professional researchers are invited to use the LBI/CJH Legacy Catalog, a classical Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) for searching the Institute’s complete holdings. The CJH/LBI Legacy Catalog displays more bibliographical details and provides more search options. than the CJH Catalog.
LBI digitized more than 250 of its 1,600 German-Jewish periodicals and features them in the digital portal “Internet Archive.” Publications include newspapers, journals, and newsletters from Jewish communities, sports organizations, professional organizations, and more.
