Women in the Rabbinate Then & Now: A Conversation with Rabbis Sally J. Priesand and Sonja K. Pilz
The story of women in the rabbinate brings together German and American history. Many people know that when Sally J. Priesand was ordained in 1972, she became the first woman rabbi in North America. Yet the first woman rabbi in Jewish history was a German woman, Regina Jonas (1902-1944). The American Jewish Archives and the Leo Baeck Institute have joined forces to sponsor a rare and fascinating conversation on women rabbis, then and now, featuring two pioneering women: Rabbi Sally Priesand, ordained at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, 1972; and Rabbi Sonja Pilz, ordained at the Abraham Geiger College in 2015.
Light refreshments to be served.
This event is complimentary, but registration is required.
This event is part of the Year of German-American Friendship, initiated by the German Federal Foreign Office and the Goethe-Institut, and supported by the Federation of German Industries (BDI).
