Economist Edna Ehrlich’s Papers Processed and Digitized

The extensive personal and professional papers of the economist Edna E. Ehrlich née Gottesman (1919–2015) were recently digitized. Ehrlich became the second woman ever to serve as Research Officer, Senior Economist, and International Advisor at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, a career she had started in 1944. She received her doctorate in 1960 from the New School for Social Research with her dissertation The Role of Banking in Japan’s Economic Development.

Upon her retirement in 1987, she became an international consultant on Asian banking and financial systems and founded a nonprofit to support performances of contemporary Asian classical music. She was married to the Austrian-born economist Otto H. Ehrlich who was born in Vienna in 1892 and later taught economics at the New School. Much of the correspondence in the collection deals with the couple’s courtship and marriage.
